I am currently working on a graphic that is 24" x 36" @ 300dpi. I noticed that
Fireworks wants to cough up a hairball when I set the canvas size to 24" x 36".
Instead, it wants to reset the image/canvas size to around 22" x 33". I
couldn't find any documentation on this issue. Has anyone else experienced this?

Fireworks was designed to create Web graphics and layouts, not to work
with large high res images. You are using the wrtong tool for the job.

Btw, Fireworks is not concerned by physical measurements like inches or
by DPI, it only deals in pixels (and PPI) and the maximum canvas size as
of Fireworks MX 2004 is 10000 x 10000 pixels (divided by 300 ppi this
would yield a document of 33 1/3 x 33 1/3 inches max). With a document
of that size Fireworks will slow to a crawl no matter the amount of
memory you throw at it. If you wanted to design mostly with vectors I
suggest you try FreeHand instead. FreeHand is a print based app that
would be the perfect tool for the job. If you wanted to mostly deal with
bitmap elements then you'll have to use Photoshop.

HTH!
